About Tunnel:

Tunnel was founded in 1975 by Mitch Haake, a surfboard shaper who started skateboarding many years earlier, bombing hills in San Francisco on a homemade board with metal wheels nailed to a 2 by 4 plank. Bitten by the surfing bug, he moved to Ensenada, Mexico, where an average day consisted of surfing, lunch, surfing, and downing a few brews. Not able to find a quality surfboard, Mitch shaped his own and was soon making these high-quality boards for friends. Mitch survived in his VW bus, selling surfboards and cruising from one surfbreak to another. Life was good.

In 1975, Mitch moved back to California where he opened a store where he sold surfboards and T-shirts. When skateboarding exploded, Mitch wasn't able to keep boards in stock. So he started making his own decks and wheels by hand, and word soon got out. Dudes and girls came from miles away, looking for Mitch's high-performance skateboards and surfboards. That summer, California was hit by a drought, and the result was a perfect world for skateboarders, who were always looking for concrete spillways, empty pools, pipes and tunnels to conquer. Mitch named his new company Tunnel, and the name Tunnel soon became synonymous with the best-quality products and a cool sense of style. Tunnel products became so popular that Mitch decided to start the famous Team Tunnel, perhaps the most dominating skateboard team of its' day. Team Tunnel was filled with legendary names like Waldo Autry, Ray Flores, Wally Inouye, Doug Schneider, Gregg "Queaver" Ayres (and his dog Scruggs), Rod Saunders, Rick Blackhart, the Buck Brothers, and Steve Weston. Team Tunnel was the team, and it dominated vert, pool and pipe-riding.

In 1977, Mitch created the Tunnel Rock, among the most famous wheels ever produced for skateboarding. The Tunnel Rock was the first hard wheel and super fast, and it changed skateboarding forever. No other wheel of the day even came close. Dogtown skaters discovered the Tunnel Rock after they were brought into the group by Team Tunnel members. Before long, Stacy Peralta, Shogo Kubo, Jim Muir, Tony Alva, Marty Grimes and Jay Adams were ripping pools on their Tunnel Rocks. These skateboarders would later be immortalized in the film "The Lords of Dogtown". The Tunnel brand was growing. Almost every skater could be seen with Tunnel stickers, which were often printed on holographic or "space" tape. When asked today about the Tunnel Rock, Mitch says, "The only complaint I ever had about the Tunnel Rock was that there weren't enough of them. They were the best skateboard wheel in the world."
